Autism Spectrum Disorder
A neurodevelopmental condition affecting communication, social interaction, and behavior.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition characterized by differences in social communication, social interaction, and the presence of restricted or repetitive behaviors and interests. ASD presents across a wide spectrum, meaning that the nature and severity of challenges vary significantly from person to person. Early identification and intervention are critical for optimizing outcomes.
Communication challenges in individuals with ASD may include delayed language development, difficulty with conversational skills, limited use of gestures and nonverbal communication, echolalia, and challenges understanding figurative language, humor, or sarcasm. Some individuals with ASD may be minimally verbal or nonverbal and benefit from augmentative and alternative communication (AAC).
Speech-language pathologists are integral members of the multidisciplinary team serving individuals with ASD. Intervention addresses core communication deficits including joint attention, social reciprocity, pragmatic language, and functional communication, using evidence-based approaches tailored to each individual's strengths and needs.
